About Fasting
Fasting And Your Fortune
Possibly every ancient religion in the world – be it Christianity, Islam, Hinduism Buddhism or Judaism is full of tales about fasting and its
benefits.
No doubt over the centuries some of the benefits have disappeared in a haze of rituals and traditions. However, if you were to take a look at
the world around, you will realize that it is instinctive to fast for most living creatures. Take a look at your pet dog. If he is under the
weather, there’s no way he’ll eat till he’s back to normal.
Yes, what fasting does to your body especially when it is not performing to its optimum capacity is to put it back to normal. It really is
nature’s healer and so many of us just don’t realize that we don’t very often need to resort to medication for our ailments when we have such a
powerful healer like fasting to turn to.
Fasting and Fitness
Let’s look at the body like a machine – a self healing machine. If we keep it overly busy by stuffing hard to digest food down our throats
ever so often every day, how on earth will it have the time to restore and regenerate itself?
This is why perhaps the wise old men of old tied fasting in with religious ceremonies so people didn’t question – they just observed the days
of fasting and all was well with their world. So many of the ‘modern day diseases’ can be avoided and even cured with fasting. First of all,
fasting means rest for the body from its digestive process.
This leaves it free to concentrate on the other areas like healing and maintenance. Fasting can be in many forms – complete fasting, water
fasting, juice fasting, fasts that exclude heavy foods like meats and fried stuff, etc. When you fast, the body draws on the stored fat for its
energy which is needed to carry out the various bodily functions. This means the excess fat is broken down and the released into the body. Less
fatty deposits in the body makes for a healthier and a longer life.
Fasting also breaks down unnatural growths in the body like tumors and there is a more efficient production of protein in the body which helps
in cell replacement. It happens automatically when one is ill and doesn’t feel like eating – this gives the body the extra energy needed to fight
the infection. Giving the body a rest when one is healthy is necessary too – think of it like servicing your vehicle. You need to do it to make
it running well again.
Start small. Don’t go on those long fasts because your body needs to get acclimatized. Start with fasting for a day. Then after a couple of
months, do it for two, then three and then take it to 4 or 5 days. It’s amazing how fit and light you feel and how suddenly you can think much
more clearly. If you want to put your health in the path of good fortune, fasting could well be the key.
