Body Acidity

Acidity in the body? Read on to find out why this "Body Acidity issue" is important for your health…

Learn what body acidity means, and how food and body acidity are related to one another.

An even acid-alkaline balance is very important for your health

I have long thought about how this issue can be discussed so that non-medics can also understand it, since it plays a truly important role in one’s health and with regard to many illnesses.

We will start off with a few observations on the role that body acidity plays in clinical orthodox medicine and what body acidity means if you were to talk about it with your doctor.

Then you will understand what is generally understood by body acidity and what lies behind it! You will be surprised and further, you will start to think about your diet.

What orthodox medicine understands by acidity

Orthodox medicine starts from the premise that the term “over-acidification” cannot be generally applied. Acidity of the blood is not tolerated by the body and will be accompanied by serious illnesses. Such illnesses are not thought to be curable by natural methods such as an alkaline diet.

Many cell and enzyme level functions are constrained within a very narrow pH spectrum. Enzymes are referred to as bio-catalysts which get our metabolisms going and speed them up.
Next, we must be clear about what a pH level is, and what significance it has for our health.

Acidity: The relationship between acids and alkalis in our body

The relationship between acids and alkalis is defined by pH levels. A pH level indicates the relationship between acids and alkalis in a given fluid. A neutral level is 7, anything below this is acid and anything above it is alkaline.

The pH level of blood, to give an example, is somewhere between 7.35 and 7.45 and has to remain within this spectrum. Major deviations will not be tolerated by the body and would not be compatible with life.

If body acidity has infected the blood, then this is known as acidosis. It can lead to a drop in blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmias such as asystolia, a drop in the contraction capacity of the heart, attenuation of the central nervous system leading to dizziness, muscular weakness and even as far as coma.

Therefore emergency doctors can do more for over-acidification than your GP, because it is part of their daily work. You will read more in this article on why an even acid-alkaline balance is extremely important for your health.

The term "acidity" in natural medicine

When the term body acidity is used in the field of natural medicine, then the premise is either a periodical (latent or acute) or a chronic (permanent) case of over-acidification.

Both terms are contested in orthodox medicine. The only thing recognised is the term of acute over-acidification which we have just identified as acidosis and which has, above all, a role in intensive medicine.
Natural medicine’s diagnosis of illnesses which becomes explicable through the condition of over-acidification occurs with urine diagnoses, as well as with symptom examinations such as heartburn, gastro-intestinal disorders, immune system problems or dermatitis (skin diseases).

Many of these illnesses listed could be corrected through alkaline diets or the intake of alkaline supplements which reinforce the body acidity theory.

One must also realise that the filtering organs can get encumbered through an excessive intake of acidic foodstuffs.

A majority of acidic matter gets filtered out through the kidneys. Since the kidneys are among the most used filtering organs, one can accurately predict an overload by measuring the pH of the urine. With a test strip which you can get from any pharmacist, you can measure the pH of your urine.

If you have a highly acidic pH, then it is clear that certainly the day before the test, you ate too much acidic food, you were perhaps under too much stress, or you drank too little water.

How can one reach such an imbalance, or such a chronic over-acidification?

Chronic body acidity can have many causes. However, we must first of all clarify the question once again, as to why these acids are tied up IN the body, instead of getting filtered OUT.

Let’s just summarise once more: daily occurring acids will be filtered out – NORMALLY.

The production and the filtering of acidic metabolic products in healthy organisms are normally in balance.
Acidic metabolic products (let’s just call them “acids“) occasionally get removed by conjunctive tissue, lymph and blood into the filtering organs.

In this way, the lungs filter out passing acids and the kidneys do so with the complex acids, while the liver as a detoxifying organ, mainly plays the role of getting rid of ammonium poisoning. This is how bicarbonate molecules are consumed.

Both the blood and the filtering organs can take in, move out and filter a certain amount of acidity in a given timeframe. You know how it works: when you have too many guests at home, the dustbin gets filled up more quickly.

In order that during this process there is no damage done to the tissue (e.g. the vascular walls) certain buffers (like bicarbonate) prevent the blood from getting too far into the acidic pH zone.

Before acids can be transported through the blood, the conjunctive tissue with its proteoglycans and glycoproteins has a very special role to play.

The conjunctive tissue molecules function as ion exchangers. These are in a position to temporarily store protons. In this way, acids can be temporarily “parked” in the conjunctive tissue, until the blood and/or the filtering organs have sufficient capacity once more. The fact that morning urine has the lowest pH points to this removal of acids from the kidneys.

When more acids enter than are removed, the conjunctive tissue becomes over acidified.

Let’s stay a little longer with the example of the rubbish bin. When there is too much rubbish inside, it quickly starts to overflow...

And this is exactly what happens with your conjunctive tissue. There is gradually an excessive build up of acid.

The remaining acidic valence remains “parked” in the conjunctive tissue. This process is known in the vernacular as “slagging”. When one refers to deposits in the conjunctive tissue, one is also speaking about cellulite.

Slagging has serious consequences!

Through the permanent connection of acidic metabolic products with the chains of conjunctive tissue molecules, the capacity for holding water and the transport characteristics for almost all foodstuffs in the interstitium change.

The conjunctive tissue literally swells up and gets more and more damaged due to the consequently deficient nutrient and oxygen supply as well as through the ever stronger and further increasing “slagging“ process.

This is a gradual process, which can drag on for many years, and can manifest itself in many different symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Exhaustion
  • Listlessness
  • Weak concentration
  • Insomnia
  • Neuralgia
  • Aches and pains
  • Joint pain
  • Allergies
  • Random inflammations
  • Frequent colds
  • Conjunctivitis
  • And much more...

When the environment of the cells is no longer right, then we should not be surprised at lapses in our system. In this case, illnesses are only symptoms of this over-acidification.

I often hear from experience, “Yeah, but I was infected!”, or, “Yes, but it’s hereditary…”

This is naturally all correct, but a cell which is optimally looked after and enjoys the best of health itself, will recover from (almost) every pathogen.

In the list above, I have left out one important illness - that which people are most scared about: cancer. The pH level outside cancerous cells in the case of a tumour, is lower than that of the surrounding healthy cells. In the cancerous cells themselves, it is even lower.

From the point of view of natural medicines, we can state that cancerous cells are only big rubbish bins into which acidic valences from chronic over-acidification, are dumped.

Why do most illnesses not take place until older age? With increasing age, numerous factors appear which breed illnesses. I am limiting myself in this article in essence to the theme of over-acidification and the acid-alkaline balance.

With age, for example, the ability of the kidneys to filter out goes down. As a consequence of that, there is a decrease in the level of blood pH as well as the bicarbonate level in the blood. From that, the buffer effect diminishes and thus protons cannot be flushed out so well by the kidneys.

The causes of body-acidity

A lack of exercise, as well as fresh air leads to a diminished circulation and oxygen supply in the tissue, but at the same time, too much exercise (e.g. serious sport) can also lead to localised body acidity through lactic acid (milk acid). As with everything in life, it is about finding the right balance…

Some more of the most common causes are: stress, acute and chronic illnesses which further damage the system and of course, food. You will find out more about this in the article “Alkaline Foods” as well as “Food and Over-Acidification”.

The increased intake of acid forming foodstuffs like meat, sausages, cheese, eggs, sugar, coffee or alcohol appears in this context, in a totally different light.

Don’t underestimate the factor of “negative” stress. “Negative” stress leads to certain hormonal movements in the body, which consequently affect the acid-alkaline balance.

What can be done?

On this website you will find many tips and suggestions as to what you can do to de-acidify your body, like, for instance the article, “De-Acidification”.

The most comprehensive solution is health-fasting. If you have read the article on body acidity up to this point, you will have a rough idea of why health fasting can be beneficial. At the same time, elements such as weight loss play a very small part.
